Today is the first day of Fall, or Autumn to anyone who speaks English outside of the USA. I’ve been in a fall-y mood for a little while now as the weather has definitely been cooler here than I’m used to back in the states. We’ve actually already caught our first family cold of the season and are finally getting back to normal after three weeks.
So in honor of the first true day of the Autumn I made a bucket list of things that must be accomplished in the next three months.
Feel free to download it here.
In the last days I did convince the family to get our annual Pumpkin Spice Latte’s to celebrate fall-iness. We try to really enjoy them because they’re just to expensive to buy on a regular basis. But that inspired me to find my own copycat recipe.
Here’s the front runner:
3/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon sugar
8 ounces brewed coffee (or 1-2 shots of espresso)
- Mix together milk and pumpkin in a pan. Cook on medium heat until steaming.
- Take off of the heat. Mix in vanilla, spices, and sugar. Blend for 30 seconds until foamy.
- Pour coffee into a large mug; add the mixture on top. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon.
Sounds simple enough! I just have to find some pumpkin puree around here. Germany does not go as crazy for fall as American’s do. It’s kind of nice because this country seems a little more practical and down to earth. You can really see the commercialism that over takes the US for anything where they can make a buck. But I also miss it a little.
And then I made an apple pie the other day. Ok, I don’t really love pie but what says fall more than apple pie… So I compromised and it turned into more of an apple tart. We served it with coffee after dinner with some friends. Next time I think I’d cut the sugar in half but overall, it had good reviews! I’m not usually a baker but maybe it’s a nesting instinct because in the last month I’ve baked a peach cobbler and a carrot cake too… That’s huge for me!
And if you’re still not feeling ready for fall yet, here are a few quotes that capture it’s beauty.
“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.” ― Jim Bishop
“There is a harmony in autumn, and a lustre in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!” ― Percy Bysshe Shelley
Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” ― George Eliot
But I think what is most important about Fall is who you’re spending it with. So go find the one’s you care about and spend some quality time together!
